Thursday’s Anglo-Italian curtain-raiser
A WOMAD tradition of many a summer –ever since we moved the festival from downtown Reading to deepest Wiltshire, in fact –has been that the weekend’s festivities open on Thursday evening with a collaborative performance featuring local Malmesbury schoolchildren and a notable artist or group. And who are we to buck the trend? This year, the teenage melody-makers find themselves under the tutelage of the marvellous Amaraterra, those fine practitioners of the song and dance folk traditions of southern Italy –pizzica, tarantella and the beat of the tamburello drum. Bellissima!
