Samba-soul and Afro-Latin grooves

Some bands are just made for a summer festival, their modus operandi being to supply sun-drenched grooves to an equally sun-drenched crowd of revellers. And so it is with London six-piece The Fontanas. Their name might be suggestive of a suited-and-booted early ’60s beat combo, but this lot have set their compass for Latin America –Brazil to be most precise. Funky Afro-Latin tunes and sultry samba soul are their stock in trade, while they’re not averse to stirring a little high-stepping ska into the brew too. Their pedigree is solid and noteworthy, boasting members who’ve served time alongside such excellent folk as Mr Scruff and Alice Russell. They’re the recipients of high praise from Radio 1Xtra’s DJ Edu, while the godfather of soul over at sister station 6 Music, Craig Charles, declared them “totally funky”. We think you’ll agree.
