Taraf de Haïdouks spin-off project
A true story. Once upon a time, back in the days when a riverside field on the banks of the Thames in Reading was WOMAD Central, Johnny Depp turned up at the back gate wanting to be let in to watch the great Romanian gypsy band Taraf de Haïdouks performing (it seemed churlish to turn him away). Well, he might be back this weekend as several of the band playing that day –including violinist Georghe ‘Caliu’ Anghel and accordionist Marius ‘Marin’ Manole –have reconvened under a new umbrella: Taraf de Caliu. The name of the game remains the same: the high-velocity traditional music of their particular corner of southern Romania, played with jaw-dropping virtuosity, supreme style and infinite jest. A true treat awaits. And don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for Johnny.
