Horn-heavy Afro-jazz and Afrobeat
There are certain ingredients you need for a band trading in Afro-jazz and Afrobeat. Horns that that just explode out of the traps? Check. Guitar that snakes in and out of the rest of the band? Check. Twinkling electric piano and scuttling drums? Check, check. Nubiyan Twist have all that and much more besides, including a fabulously husky singer in Nubiya Brandon. They also chuck in Latin flavours too, along with soul, ska and hip-hop, seasoning the stew to the perfect degree. NARCmagazine opted for a more poetic description, calling this ten-piece “a bombastic salvo of jive-inducing sonic influences”. And the praise doesn’t end there. Not only have both Tony Allen and Mulatu Astatke been sufficiently impressed to collaborate with them, but also a certain David Byrne handpicked the band to join his line-up for the South Bank Centre’s Meltdown Festival. Nubiyan Twist are likely to melt you down too.
