WOMAD is a one-of-a-kind festival when it comes to families! We know how important it is for children to run free, create, imagine and play. The World of Children is an integral part of the festival with Sunday’s procession (a storming, stomping, full on delight of a parade around the site!) a vital aspect of the festival’s annual finale.
Every child is welcome at WOMAD and encouraged to get involved in the many exciting activities lined up in the World of Children. We find that mums and dads don’t like to stand on the sidelines for too long – there’s far too much to get stuck into! There are over 200 free activities for children which will all be in the WOMAD app which will be free to download closer to the festival.
We’ve put together this guide to WOMAD for you full of tips, tricks, and advice to ensure you have the most jam-packed, family-friendly festival experience ever!
Packing for WOMAD
It’s always tricky to know what to pack for a weekend at a festival! Bring summer clothes, sunglasses (we’ve heard that Suneez are great for little ones) and loads of suncream. Don’t leave your waterproofs and wellies at home though, just in case!
You can purchase a metal WOMAD water bottle on site and we have plenty of free water points for refilling. Don’t forget wet wipes for any spillages or sudden emergencies and lots of snacks to keep kids happy after long days of running around the World of Children! Ear defenders for children also come highly recommended by WOMAD families – in case you’re dancing near the front!
Our family campsite (see where it is located on the festival map) is the perfect place to pitch up for the weekend if you have children. With other families nearby, an ever-friendly atmosphere and stewards on hand to ensure a calm, quiet vibe carries on into the evening you can be sure to get an early night if you need one.
If carrying a tent is one thing too many, we have loads of amazing glamping options at WOMAD. With pre-pitched tents from Camp WOMAD, Hearthworks yurts, tipis, cosy wooden Podpads, and even Shelterbox survival tents – there are loads of gorgeous options to choose from. Camp in comfort and know you don’t have to take your tent down at the end of the weekend… phew!
Make sure you bring blankets and warm jumpers for the evenings and consider hiring a Cart to Camp trolley – they provide a great place for children to nap on the move and a great place to store things when you’re busy getting around the site. See our tickets pages for all of the amazing options to make your weekend as comfortable as possible.
There are loads of amazing food traders at WOMAD selling food from around the world so there are lots of new and exciting tastes to try! If, however, your children need the comfort of homely food every now and again, have a look at what’s on offer under ‘Markets’ in the WOMAD app and find a meal to suit everyone in the family!
We have a designated breastfeeding space for mums in the World of Children if you’d like to be somewhere quiet to relax and feed your baby. Of course, breastfeeding is welcomed anywhere at WOMAD but if you would appreciate having the space to chill out and meet other parents this is a safe and calm place to do just that.
For the thrill seekers amongst you, our funfair rides provide hours of entertainment and the big wheel is a great way to take in the sights and sounds of WOMAD from a different perspective. Hold tight!
Children under 13 go free – however, they still need a ticket so please add one to your order when you buy one.
Teenage 3-Day = £95 /Teenage 4-Day = £130 – Teenagers are aged 14-18 years and need to be accompanied by an adult with a guardian form filled in. Please see our tickets pages for all information regarding teenage tickets.
