Yalumba: From Wine to WOMAD

“Wine is constant proof that God loves us, and loves to see us happy”

Benjamin Franklin

In 1847, a 37-year-old brewer left his home in Dorset, England, with his wife and four children and sailed to Australia. He purchased a 30-acre farm and began planting the family’s first vineyard in 1849.

Over 167 years later, Yalumba is still a family business which prides itself in crafting fine wines, from which their environment plays an essential part, in fact, Yalumba is an aboriginal word for “the country that surrounds us”. Yalumba is committed to sustainable and innovative winemaking, producing fine wines, designed to be enjoyed with food and in the company of family and friends.

They have an extensive range of organic wines made from dedicated vineyards bursting with biodiversity. All their wines are vegan.

This is the first year that Yalumba has been involved with the UK festival, but they have been a sponsor of WOMADelaide since 2011, providing the wines for the festival and the Yalumba Terrace Bar.

This year the UK welcomes them as a sponsor of Taste the World in the idyllic setting of Charlton Park. Taste the World has been an increasingly popular feature of WOMAD festivals around the world since 2005, bringing artists performing at the festival to a designated ‘cookery’ stage to prepare and cook a traditional dish from their country of origin whilst in conversation with our host about their lives, music and culture, as well as their food. All this served up with a delectable side dish of spontaneous music and the audience gets to share the food and join the conversation.  These encounters are a fascinating and intimate opportunity to enter into the world of the artist.

There will be plenty of wine tasting over the festival to match with the food, but if you can’t wait that long, then Yalumba wines are available across the UK at a range of stores including  Waitrose, Majestic, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Morrisons and Co-op.

News of the artists taking part this year will be announced very soon.
