The Oxfam Festivals Team have been working with WOMAD since 2004, and this summer was the 13th year that they provided volunteers at the festival.

Oxfam provides three volunteering opportunities at WOMAD – stewards, campaigners and the festival shop team.

Stewarding is a great way both to attend the festival and contribute something back, helping make the event run smoothly, while also raising vital funds to support Oxfam’s work. By volunteering you can join a lovely team, with ages, coming from all walks of life – all united by their love of WOMAD and a desire to support charity while having fun at the festival.

We asked long term steward and WOMAD fan Chris Arnold (64) what makes the festival so special, and why he’s proud to volunteer here with Oxfam.

“WOMAD is one of my favourite festivals because it supports diverse international artists, free thought and expression, with intelligent debate on key world issues. I love the chance to see performers from more oppressive political regimes, being included and celebrated at WOMAD.”

“Stewarding for Oxfam is a privilege. Working with a team that earns over a million pounds [annually] to eliminate poverty is extremely rewarding… [and] the camaraderie of the ‘Oxfamily’ just keeps me coming back year after year.  Sometimes stewarding can be challenging, but it’s the incredible work I’m fundraising for that keeps me motivated. And whether it’s just life experience, the maturity that comes with age or because of my history in managing people, I’m glad to be on hand and to lend them my skills.”

This summer, the Oxfam campaigners will be talking to you about the Stand As One campaign, and this year there is an opportunity to show solidarity with the millions of families that have been displaced fleeing conflict, disaster and poverty in the current refugee crisis. They want people to get involved in a digital action to try and bring those vulnerable families back together.

The Oxfam shop is in the arena, and is the perfect place to browse and stock up on any festival fashion, blankets, wellies or sunglasses that you may have forgotten to pack.
