Foodie Heaven at WOMAD 2017

Tastebuds are tingling and mouths are watering at the mere thought of WOMAD 2017. Alongside the cool and colourful line-up including names such as Oumou Sangaré, Benjamin Zephaniah and the Revolutionary Minds, Nick Mulvey and La Dame Blanche, the world’s festival also celebrates culinary delights from across the globe with the Yalumba Taste the World stage boasting an array of artists cooking up a storm, a partnership with award-winning Australian wine brand Yalumba, cookery lessons for kids, and a smorgasbord of other culinary treats for festival-goers to try.

Food and music is at the heart of WOMAD and the Yalumba Taste The World stage is the perfect fusion of the two, inviting artists performing at the festival to cook up recipes from their own countries whilst regaling the crowd with personal anecdotes and off the cuff performances. A selection of the artists cooking up a storm this year are Metá Metá, who bring a taste of Brazil to the stage, Viguela whose traditional Spanish fare includes Gazpacho, Tortilla and Arroz con Leche, authentic vegan Tex Mex from Las Cafeteras and Savina Yannatou ‘s Greek delights.

Festival-goers will also be able to sample the delights of Ethiopia with Selamnesh Zemen and The Nile Project offering up ‘Doro Wat’. Surprises too come in the shape of the wonderful Speech Debelle (one time semi-finalist on Masterchef) dipping into her cookbook and vocal repertoire.

Yalumba Taste the World will also welcome some very special guests in the form of the Tanzania Albinism Collective, a group of singers ostracised from society due to their condition. This will be a rare opportunity for this group to cook for others and share their culture through food, song and spoken word.  This will be a truly unique and special experience for all involved, with delicious Ugali na Samaki from the Collective’s home country and an insight into an otherwise unknown society.

After a fantastically successful debut partnership last year, Australia’s oldest family-owned winery Yalumba is back for WOMAD 2017, bringing with them over 168 years of winemaking history and expertise. Continuing a collaboration based on WOMAD and Yalumba’s shared passion for sustainability and family-based ethos, the vast selection of refreshing wines will not only be available at bars throughout the festival site, but also as part of the Yalumba Taste the World stage, which provides the perfect environment for Yalumba wines to be enjoyed alongside some spectacular dishes from around the world. Bigger and better than ever, the Yalumba wine bar is also back for 2017, and offers a wide range of delectable wines for festival-goers. As well as wine ambassadors on hand to provide advice and answer any questions, Yalumba Winemaker Kevin Glastonbury will also be on-site this year, having come all the way from Australia to offer exclusive wine tasting sessions and talks to compliment the incredible food on offer, where he will be able to give festival-goers an insight into the craft of sustainable winemaking and creating wine that is 100% vegan and vegetarian friendly.

The lush fields of Wiltshire transform into food heaven for one weekend only, offering up a veritable feast from every corner of the globe. Whether it is Goan curries made with fresh Cornish fish, Damascene falafel with Marrakechi fries, authentic East End pie and mash, gaucho style rib-eye steak, Filipino noodles or Spanish paella and churros, there is something for everyone’s palate with mouth-watering offerings from all over the world. For sweet-toothed WOMADers, there’s everything from organic crumpets drizzled with salted caramel, chocolate spread or jam to bubblegum cake and gluten free cream teas which keep the guilt at bay.

Young festival-goers will be donning their chef’s hats and aprons as the kid’s cookery workshops are back by popular demand – with everything from vegetarian sushi to everyday delights on the menu. It’s first come first served with no prior booking, so arrive early to get a place and become the next junior masterchef!
