Our friends eclectic

If their own releases are anything to go by, you can only wonder how rich and extensive and enlightening the record collections of the Thievery Corporation must be. Many musicians describe themselves as eclectic when in fact their landscape is quite narrow. The Thievery Corporation chaps – Rob Garza and Eric Hilton – aren’t among this set. Instead, the Washington DC duo genuinely do take musical inspiration from everywhere and anywhere, and often it makes its way into their eminently tasteful electronica. On Thievery Corporation records, there’s room for the music of Brazil, Jamaica, Nigeria, India and the Middle East and many other destinations. This eclecticism extends to their choice of collaborators over the past near-25 years – David Byrne, The Flaming Lips, Anoushka Shankar, Seu Jorge and Femi Kuti are just a few to share studio space with the pair. It’s all deliberate. “We definitely don’t want to limit ourselves to one format,” says Hilton. “We like to dabble.”
