The Herbaliser feat. Rodney P

Return of the soul/jazz/hip-hop collective

It could have been so different. When they formed The Herbaliser in the early ‘90s, Jake Wherry and Ollie Teeba – a pair of young London hip-hop heads who wanted to give their favourite style the live band treatment – didn’t know any rappers and so took the group down an instrumental route, adding cinematic touches to their beats and their soul/jazz tendencies. It gave them both a clear identity and a thrilling modus operandi, as well as seeing them swiftly signed to the influential Ninja Tune label. Over the course of several albums – including Very Mercenary and Something Wicked This Way Comes – they’ve come to know and collaborate with many rappers, among them Roots Manuva and What What. For many years now, they’ve worked with Rodney P, one of the totemic figures on the UK hip-hop scene. But that quintessential Herbaliser sound remains, one further enhanced by the spoken-word element.
