Tanzania Albinism Collective Tanzania
Tanzania Albinism Collective
Their WOMAD appearance will be the first time any of the collective have ever travelled outside Tanzania, and many will be leaving the island for the first time.
In the summer of 2016, Grammy-winning producer and author Ian Brennan (Tinariwen, Malawi Mouse Boys, Zomba Prison Project) travelled to northern Tanzania to work with members of the long-persecuted albinism community. None had previously played an instrument or written a song, but eighteen of them, ranging in age from 24 to 57, joined Brennan’s workshop.
They came up with a poignant set of songs like “I Am a Human Being,” “They Gossiped When I Was Born” and “Never Forget the Killings,” with many written in the local dialects of Kikirewe and Jeeta and detailing themes of loneliness and suffering, although resilience and triumph also prevail. Roots World states, “…there has never been music collected in all of the African continent that sounds quite like much of this record.”
