Richard Spaven Trio

Club-friendly jazz drummer

“That’s the style,” says Richard Spaven. “The skills of a jazz drummer but the mentality of a club-goer.” Arguably one of the most open-eared and adventurous sticksmen around, Richard is a man who inhabits two worlds: he trained as a jazz drummer but drum & bass and broken beat is his internal heartbeat. Accordingly, the music he makes straddles both incarnations, narrowing any gulf there might have been between jazz and dance music. As well as being a veteran of the drum stool for both Cinematic Orchestra and Flying Lotus, he’s also collaborated with 4Hero and Gregory Porter. His current trio – featuring Stuart McCallum on guitar and Dan Gulino on bass – represents another voyage of discovery. Unsure how they sound? The Guardian’s John Fordham has said it best, describing how the trio’s fast-paced live performances are centred around “guitar-vibrato shimmers badgered by snare-drum shuffles and lurching off-beats”. That’ll do nicely.
