Raquel Tavares Portugal
The best ‘fadistas’ (as female fado singers are known)...
At 32, Raquel Tavares is one of the most exciting young voices in contemporary fado, the dramatic and uniquely Portuguese style made famous by Amalia Rodrigues and Mariza and which was recently added to UNESCO’s ‘World’s Intangible Cultural Heritage’ list.
Born in Lisbon, Tavares released her debut album in 2006. But the best ‘fadistas’ (as female fado singers are known) are like a fine wine that matures in the bottle and her fourth album – titled simply Raquel and released in 2016 – was her first on a major label (Sony) and represented the full ripening of her prodigious talent.
