Rajab Suleiman & Kithara
Zanzibari music featuring oud, accordion, double bass and percussion, with vocalists.

Suleiman formed Kithara in 2012 in order to expand the scope and appeal of Zanzibari music, after spending years playing the qanun (zither) in the Culture Musical Club, whose recordings were instrumental in introducing the island’s rich legacy of Arabic-influenced taarab music with an East African rhythm to a global audience.

Taarab still lies at the heart of Kithara’s music but the group has also generated a new repertoire with a line-up that includes oud, accordion, double bass and percussion, while the vocalists include the soulful Saada Nassor, fast emerging as the new rising star of Swahili music.
