The wedding singer who went worldwide
Not too many good-news stories have come out of Syria in recent years, which makes the tale of Omar Souleyman all the more remarkable. He enjoyed a lucrative trade as an extremely popular wedding singer before the civil war putting his country on the front pages of the world’s press. Indeed, his popularity was such that 500 live albums of his have been released over the years. Since finding international acclaim – thanks to his four-to-the-floor anthems which appeal from New York to New Delhi – Omar hasn’t changed his tune. He’s not become a protest singer and rarely comments on his homeland’s plight. Affairs of the heart remain the focus of his art. “I don’t feel bad or bothered about the way I often sing about love,” he once confessed. His value is the positivity he brings to his beleaguered homeland.
