Noureddine Khourchid & the Whirling Dervishes of Damascus
This Sufi ensemble comprises ten singers and two dancers and draws on the 13th century traditions of the spiritual master Jaladdin al-Rumi

Led by the stirring voice of Khourshid, the son of a Syrian sheikh and who began singing at religious ceremonies at the age of five, this Sufi ensemble comprises ten singers and two dancers and draws on the 13th century traditions of the spiritual master Jaladdin al-Rumi, who believed that dance was the spontaneous outward manifestation of an inner mystical state.

The rhythmical accompaniment to the singers and dancers comes from frame drums and the repertoire includes invocations, songs of praise glorifying Allah, the story of the Prophet’s birth and life and Sufi poems on the themes of divine love and ecstasy.
