Singing those futuristic swamp blues
When such a legend as Larry Graham – founder of Grand Funk Railroad, bass player for Sly and the Family Stone and frequent collaborator with Prince – gives a hearty thumbs-up to your music, you can be forgiven for believing you’d struck gold. So the Amsterdam-based trio MY BABY, purveyors of a groove-heavy amalgam of swampy blues, dirty funk and psychedelic freakery, should definitely take a hearty bow. But anyone thinking they’re stuck in a late 60s/early 70s timewarp needs their radar redirecting. The three-piece – brother and sister Jost and Cato van Dyck and Kiwi Daniel da Freez – take these touchstones and forge them into something utterly propulsive and distinctly 21st century. And don’t just take our word for it. Counterfeit magazine described them as “a formidable live force [that] manages to maintain the organic, building energy of the tribal gatherings they reference so often in their music”.
