Maya Youssef
“To me, music is a healer and an antidote to what’s happening, not only in Syria but in the whole world.”

One of the finest Syrian musicians of her generation and a virtuoso player of the 78-stringed plucked zither known as the kanun, Maya Youssef graduated in both Arabic and Western classical traditions from the University of Damascus and since 2012 has been living in London, where she is studying for a PhD and has performed at the BBC Proms and worked with Damon Albarn.

“Playing music is a life and hope affirming act,” she says. “To me, music is a healer and an antidote to what’s happening, not only in Syria but in the whole world.”
