Contemporary folk-rock with a Brighton accent
In Brighton, Martha Gunn holds quite a legend. She was the most renowned ‘dipper’ of the late 18th/early 19th centuries – the person who helped the notables of the age take to the waters of the English Channel. Her name lives on, with both pubs and buses named after her. Now, though, the grammatically altered MarthaGunn are forging a reputation of their own across the town and further beyond. This unfeasibly young five-piece deal in contemporary folk-rock – think of them as the 21st-century missing link between Fairport Convention and Fleetwood Mac. Along the way, they’ve shared stages with Mumford & Sons and James Bay but, two well-received singles in, they’re in no rush to accelerate their career. For now, live shows are where it’s at. The south coast’s best-kept secret may not be that for much longer. The tide is turning.
