Mammal Hands

Adventurous jazz trio

The wave of twentysomething British jazz musicians continues to gather in strength and stature, but while London provides much of its momentum, let’s not leave Norwich out of the credits. For this is the home of Mammal Hands, the three-man outfit on a mission to bend jazz’s perimeters a little further, to redraw its boundaries. From their East Anglian base, the trio – Jordan Smart (tenor and soprano saxes), Nick Smart (piano) and Jesse Barrett (drums and percussion) – have been able to evolve at their own pace in the media’s spotlight. Praise has nonetheless still poured forth from the capital; London Jazz News described their debut Animalia as “much more than an exercise in contemplative atmospherics”. And they’re right. Titans like Pharoah Sanders and Steve Reich are clearly heroes, while echoes of India and North Africa offer further depth and shade. Come join these free spirits on their journeys without maps.
