Mamadou Diabate & Percussion Mania
Mamadou Diabate is a master of the ancient wooden balafon (xylophone).

Hailing from an hereditary family of traditional musicians and storytellers dating back many generations, Mamadou Diabate is a master of the ancient wooden balafon (xylophone), the defining instrument of the music of Burkina Faso’s Sambla people.

A child prodigy, he began playing at the age of five and formed his first band at the age of 18. Resident in Vienna since 2000, two years later he released the first ever international recording of Sambla music in the Sambla language. Yet he says he doesn’t even need to open his mouth to tell his stories:  to the Sambla, the balafon is a language in itself.
