Ifriqiyya Electrique Tunisia/Italy/France
An eloquent, polyglot conversation between Sufi trance rituals and post-industrial sonics
Formed in the Djerid desert in southern Tunisia, Ifriqiyya Electrique is an eloquent, polyglot conversation between Sufi trance rituals and post-industrial sonics.
Ancient rhythms and chants sung and played by three traditional musicians from the Banga community collide with 21st century global sounds and perspectives under the guidance of Francois Cambuzat and Gianna Greco, veterans of the Mediterranean punk and avant-rock scene with Putan Club.
“This is not a world music project but a wild process of improvisation and re-composition that brings traditional instruments face to face with computers and electric guitars,” Cambuzat says.
