House of Waters

New territory for the hammered dulcimer

The hammered dulcimer isn’t the most obvious instrument of choice for a young man. But in the hands of Brooklynite Max ZT, it becomes a portal into an extraordinary world of sound. Indeed, so thrilling is Max’s playing that the United States’ bastion of fine taste – National Public Radio – anointed him as “the Jimi Hendrix of hammered dulcimer”. Like Hendrix, he thrives in the trio format. The other two members of House Of Waters – bass player Moto Fukushima and drummer Ignacio Rivas Bixio – are his Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell. Together they make a jazz-imbued sound so fluid and mercurial that it’s difficult to pin down in one place with mere words. It’s ambient and yet uplifting, progressive but timeless. This is instrumental music that does anything and goes anywhere. Indeed, one review described them as “bending the very fabric of the musical universe as we know it”.
