Goldie (DJ set)
National treasure brings out the vinyl
Goldie isn’t a man content with running on the spot. This is an innovator who insists on covering as much ground as possible – and the more varied the terrain, the better. To prove this, the drum & bass pioneer’s latest album, The Journey Man, was a collaboration with the Heritage Orchestra (“It’s a bit more expansive,” he told the NME. “I’ve grown up a lot”). It represents the latest chapter in a life less ordinary: from his roots in the graffiti scene of the 1980s right through to being made an MBE for services to music. Through his Metalheadz label, he was a crucial figure on the British dance music scene in the 1990s. Indeed, the music journalist Simon Reynolds declared that “Goldie revolutionised jungle not once but thrice”. For his appearance this weekend, the man will be digging deep into those record boxes, certain to be delivering a DJ set that spans the decades.
