The music of the natural world
Chris Watson is one of the greatest sound recordists of our times. From his early days in Cabaret Voltaire through to his voluminous work recording nature, he has always sought out the music in everyday sound, whether it be a train powering across the Mexican desert or the groaning inside an Icelandic glacier (Chris describes the latter as “putting a microphone where you can’t put your ears”). This weekend, he’ll be presenting his Riding The Silver Tide project, recordings he’s made of the dawn chorus as summer daybreak filters across the country, from the far north of Scotland to the far south west of England. En route, we hear the music of many different species of bird as we encounter Britain’s diverse landscape, from towering sea cliffs, across open moorland and diving down into woodlands. Wings of song, indeed.
