Savvy, contemporary Welsh folk

The pressure to reinvent the wheel is felt by any songwriter. For traditionalist musicians, this presents a particular problem. How can one stay relevant, if the very essence of the style is set in the past?

Calan seems to have found an answer. In their excavation of historic Welsh folk music, the quintet managed to create something that feels incredibly current. Their youthful folk revivalism produces a setlist that seamlessly combines songs inspired by medieval Welsh myth (“A Tale of Two Dragons”) with lyrics about selfie-taking with American border security (“Deportation Selfie”).

Calan’s outlook is fresh, adventurous and always enthusiastic. With rave reviews for their live performances and recordings, they are the deserving golden children of Welsh roots.
