Exploring the rich intersection between electronic music, Afro-Cuban rumba and Sufi mysticism.

Ariwo explore the rich intersection between electronic music, Afro-Cuban rumba and Sufi mysticism. Comprising Iranian electronic composer Pouya Ehsaei and the Cuban trio of  conga player Oreste Noda,  trumpeter Yelfris Valdes and percussionist, Hammadi Valdes,  the London-based band take their name  from the word for ‘noise’  in Yoruba, the West-African language that came to Cuba via the transatlantic slave trade and played a key part in the island’s musical development.

The quartet came together in 2015 with an  aim  to “connect our native musical traditions to electronic music in a way that pushes beyond traditional Cuban and Iranian identity, creating a sound that does not belong to any specific culture.”
